Sponsorship of Kirkcudbright Red Squirrel Group
Red squirrels are one of the UK’s most treasured native species and have virtually disappeared from much of England. They face serious pressure from invasive grey squirrels, which outcompete them for food and habitat and carry squirrel pox virus — harmless to greys but often fatal to reds. South West Scotland remains a vital stronghold for these charismatic animals, and Orroland Holiday Cottages are proud to sponsor the Kirkcudbright Red Squirrel Group’s vital conservation work.
About the Kirkcudbright Red Squirrel Group
The Group is part of Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels network, and collaborates with volunteers to protect and monitor the local population, improve woodland habitats and control grey squirrels. Through surveys, education initiatives and projects like the red squirrel hide at Barhill Woods, they actively engage the community and help ensure that red squirrels can thrive in this part of Dumfries and Galloway.
Set within private coastal woodland just a few miles from Kirkcudbright, Orroland offers luxury holiday cottages where wildlife is part of the everyday experience. Guests regularly spot red squirrels darting through the trees, feeding in the early morning light or gathering cones in autumn. Our carefully managed woodlands, quiet surroundings and dedicated habitat create ideal conditions for wildlife watching, making Orroland one of the best places to stay near Kirkcudbright to see red squirrels in their natural environment.

We’re exceedingly grateful for Orroland Holiday Cottages’ sponsorship, which significantly aids our conservation work. I’ve long admired their dedication to protecting red squirrel habitats, helping guests enjoy these special animals while supporting local efforts to safeguard the species.
