A Wonderful Day for Wildlife, Community and Conservation at Orroland
Our Open Garden Day on Saturday 21 June was blessed with glorious sunshine, making it one of the most successful community events we have hosted at Orroland.
More than 270 visitors joined us to explore the estate’s gardens and grounds, which were looking at their very best in the summer sunshine. The day raised an impressive £3,000, with proceeds supporting both the Kirkcudbright Red Squirrel Group and our local church.
A Celebration of Red Squirrels
Red squirrels were very much the theme of the day.
Throughout the gardens, visitors discovered information boards sharing fascinating facts about Scotland’s native red squirrels and practical ways to support conservation efforts. Volunteers from the Kirkcudbright Red Squirrel Group staffed their information tent throughout the day, answering questions and helping visitors learn more about the challenges facing this much-loved species.
There was also plenty of fun, particularly when one of the group’s volunteers appeared in a giant red squirrel costume. The larger-than-life character proved a popular attraction with visitors of all ages and posed for photographs with families and the local press.
The event highlighted the important conservation work taking place locally and the enthusiasm of the volunteers who are helping to protect red squirrels across the region.
Tea, Cake and Summer Gardens
A stroll through the gardens was complemented by delicious homemade refreshments served in the walled garden.
Visitors enjoyed afternoon teas featuring homemade cakes and strawberry tarts, providing the perfect opportunity to relax, catch up with friends and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
The combination of beautiful gardens, summer weather and excellent baking created a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere throughout the day.
Community Support Makes It Possible
The success of the event depended on the efforts of a large team of volunteers.
Members of the local church worked tirelessly throughout the day, running a well-stocked plant sale that proved popular with keen gardeners. Volunteers from the Kirkcudbright Red Squirrel Group gave their time and expertise to engage visitors and raise awareness of local conservation projects.
We would like to thank everyone who attended, volunteered, baked, donated plants or helped behind the scenes. Community support was at the heart of the day’s success.
£3,000 Raised for Good Causes
We are delighted that the event raised £3,000, with funds being shared between the Kirkcudbright Red Squirrel Group and the local church.
The day demonstrated what can be achieved when local people come together to support wildlife conservation and community causes. It was especially encouraging to see so many visitors interested in learning more about red squirrels and the work being done to help them thrive in south-west Scotland.
Thank you to everyone who joined us. We look forward to welcoming visitors back to Orroland in the future.
